Alejandra Coronel-Zegarra

Research Assistant | FAU Lab Schools

Alejandra Coronel-Zegarra is a materials scientist dedicated to advancing ocean conservation through interdisciplinary science. Her work explores how environmental stress and disease affect coral reef ecosystems, with a focus on understanding changes in coral skeletal structure and health. By combining advanced imaging and analytical techniques, she studies how corals grow, respond to stress, and record environmental change within their skeletons.

Her research helps uncover early indicators of reef decline and provides scientific insight that can inform conservation and restoration efforts.

Alejandra received her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry and Economics from Ohio Wesleyan University. She holds an MS in Chemistry and an MS in Data Science from Florida Atlantic University and is currently completing her Ph.D. at Florida Atlantic, where she bridges materials science and marine ecology to better understand coral resilience.
