Jackson Hooten is a marine ecologist specializing in the spatial dynamics and ecology of apex predators. With a primary research focus on shark populations, Jackson’s work seeks to bridge the gap between high-level academic research and actionable conservation management.

Jackson began his academic career at Eckerd College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Science. Following his undergraduate studies, he spent seven months in Mossel Bay, South Africa, collaborating with a prominent nonprofit to conduct field research on the regional white shark population. This international experience laid the groundwork for his graduate work at Jacksonville University, where he completed a Master’s thesis investigating the complex migratory patterns and habitat use of the Western North Atlantic white shark population across the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.

In addition to his field expertise, Jackson brings a strong quantitative background to his research. He is highly proficient in biological statistics and data visualization, utilizing R programming to analyze complex ecological datasets and model animal movement. This technical toolkit allows him to translate raw telemetry data into sophisticated insights regarding population trends and habitat requirements.

Currently, Jackson is finalizing the publication of his thesis research alongside several other collaborative manuscripts. His professional background includes significant experience within the federal sector, having served as a marine scientist and contractor supporting multiple NOAA divisions, including the Office of Sustainable Fisheries and the Protected Resources Division.

As an Affiliate Scientist with Ocean First Institute, Jackson is dedicated to developing innovative research proposals that advance our understanding of marine predators while fostering institutional growth and conservation impact. By leveraging his expertise in telemetry and quantitative analysis, he aims to develop a doctoral research framework that aligns with OFI’s mission to protect the ocean’s most vital species.
