Ocean First Institute Microplastics Research Program

We engage students, educators, and community scientists in the study of microplastic pollution through hands-on research, advanced FTIR analysis, and collaborative conservation science.

Microplastics Research Program

Ocean First Institute’s Microplastics Research Program engages students, educators, and community scientists in investigating one of today’s most pressing environmental challenges: plastic pollution. Supported by the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD), the program began in Colorado, where students collect and analyze microplastics and microfibers in local waterways across six counties.

Today, the program has expanded to Florida through our partnership with Florida Atlantic University’s Lab School and the Ocean First Institute Microplastics Laboratory. Using advanced FTIR technology, participants can identify plastic particles to the polymer level, providing a deeper understanding of the sources and impacts of plastic pollution.

Through our Microplastics Fellows Program, supported by the New York Community Trust, students, educators, and community leaders receive hands-on training in microplastics research, laboratory techniques, and environmental stewardship. By combining scientific investigation with education and action, the program empowers participants to make informed choices, reduce plastic waste, and become advocates for healthier aquatic ecosystems.
