All marine life is dependent on the physical characteristics of the ocean. The ocean is not an unchanging, stagnant pool of water. Each day, water evaporates and returns, currents transport heat energy, and nutrients cycle in short-term and long-term processes, all of which maintain life.

Water chemistry is key to life in the ocean. The pH balance of something as immense as the ocean may seem inconsequential. On the contrary, it is vitally important; if pH fluctuates more than a fraction of a point it can be a matter of life and death for marine inhabitants.

The sea is not still. It moves and transports the entire bulk of the ocean in swirling masses around the planet. Powered by the rotation of the Earth, air and water flow around the globe in predictable patterns. As the water circulates, so too does the heat energy absorbed from the sun, thus creating climates and changing daily weather. Currents also move nutrients from the depths of the ocean to the surface where they are easily accessible once again. The nutrients vital to all living things are found cycling around the ocean. Inorganic compounds move back and forth between living and nonliving realms in natural cycles.

Every life, even your own, is impacted by the chemical and physical properties of the ocean. The enormity of the ocean’s size can make it seem like nothing is ever happening. Reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Catherine “Cathy” Christopher has always been passionate about science, with a special love for marine biology.. While she once dreamed of studying whales, her fascination quickly shifted to the incredible world of invertebrates during her undergraduate studies at Bowling Green State University. She later earned her Master’s in Biology from Florida Atlantic University, where she also became scuba certified and gained hands-on experience with sea turtles, birds, and everything in between.

Cathy’s career has spanned from developing engaging K-12 science curricula to leading educational initiatives that make marine science accessible to learners of all ages. When she’s not crafting the next great science lesson, Cathy can be found underwater, exploring reefs across the Caribbean and Indo-Pacific. A certified dive instructor since 2017, she loves pointing out unique marine invertebrates and is always happy to help fellow divers identify their latest underwater finds.
