Dr. Mikki from the Institute has been working with Ileana and Andres from Mision Tiburon in Costa Rica to help conserve endangered scalloped hammerhead sharks. The team has worked hard to identify critical nursery habitats, where these sharks are moving and where they are most vulnerable to fishing pressures. As part of this ongoing project, they have published the first account of young-of-year scalloped hammerheads captured off Cocos Island. This is an area that desperately needs protection for these beautiful and iconic animals and the team is monitoring shark movements on location with acoustic transmitters and receivers. Click here to read the paper.
